Five Players Selected for World University Games Camp

Aug 10, 2010

The ACHA is gearing up for the World University Games again, and this time Kent State could be represented by five players. A tryout camp in Michigan the weekend of Aug 4-6 will determine who makes the final cut for Team USA. Kent State is sent Eric Horschler, Mike Lepre, Josh Martin, Stephen Simmerer  and incoming freshman Jeremy Melby to the camp.

“We’re all very excited to be able to try out for the team,” Horschler said. “We’ve been training for this like we do for the season. The competition is going to be tough.”

Approximately 80 of the ACHA’s best players were invited to the camp, and they will be judged by eight coaches and evaluators, including Kent State’s own Head Coach Jarret Whidden.

The 2011 World University Games will take place in Turkey at the end of January.

“The odds of us making it are good if we play the way we’re supposed to,” Horschler said. “Our strengths on the ice are what got us to camp.”

Check back later in the season to see who made the team.

PR Director to Intern with Boston Bruins

May 13, 2010

Carrie Drummond, PR Director for Kent State Hockey, has accepted a position for this summer with the Boston Bruins (NHL). Carrie served as the PR Director with the team this past season and is planning to return in this capacity in the fall.

GM Chris Wilk looks for the experience to be positive one for both Carrie and the organization. "Any time you can get experience at the professional level, it will help in your personal development and achieving your career goals. Carrie has done a fantastic job with us this past season and were looking forward to her working with the organization again this coming year. She will represent Kent State very well in Boston"

“It’s a great honor to be selected as an All-Star,” Gregory said. “Especially with the high level of talent across the country.”

Kent State plans to make noise at Nationals

March 5, 2010

On Friday the Flashes hit the road to travel to the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament in Chicago. Kent State is ranked No. 12 in the country and will face off against No. 5 Iowa State in the opening round on Saturday afternoon.

"We're ready to rumble," goalie Anthony Natali said. "We've swept Iowa State before, and we know we have what it takes to beat them."

While the Flashes did sweep the Cyclones early in the season, they were shut out by Iowa State 5-0 just two weeks ago at the Central States Collegiate Hockey League playoffs.

Kent State Headed for ACHA Div I National Tournament

Feb 18, 2010

The Golden Flashes are headed to their 4th straight National Tournament in Chicago March 6-10 at the Edge. A few short weeks ago Kent St was on the outside looking in and a Tournament appearance seemed unobtainable. Wins over #1 Lindenwood and #3 Ohio provided the catalyst to propel the Golden Flashes to Chicago.

Kent St takes an impressive 23 wins into the tournament to face league rival Iowa State in the opening round. This is Kent States 7th National Tournament Appearance and 4th in a row.

Flashes Take One Win at No. 3 Ohio

Kent State split the weekend in Athens with a 4-3 overtime win on Friday night and a 5-4 loss on Saturday against Ohio University. The No. 15 Flashes were hoping to sweep the No. 3 Bobcats to help them slide into position for a trip to the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament.

“Both games were hard-fought battles until the last whistle,” Josh Martin said. “We knew coming into the weekend that we needed to have two good games and get a win or two to make it to Nationals.”

Kent State Completes Home Schedule with Two Wins

The Flashes closed out their final home weekend by sweeping Eastern Michigan in a 3-2 win on Friday and a 6-3 victory on Saturday for Senior Night.

“We did what we had to do,” assistant coach Eddie Martin said. “We came together as a team when we needed to.”

Seniors Kye Budziszewski, Jon Canniff, Jon Moser and Ryan Gregory led the team to the win Saturday following a senior ceremony that recognized the players and their parents. Budziszewski was strong on defense, and Gregory was solid in goal. Moser scored late in the third period, and Canniff sealed a hat trick with an empty-netter at the end of the game.
